Macugnaga and Mount Rosa

Our afternoon begins driving up the dramatic Anzasca Valley with it's pretty villages hanging on to the craggy rocks and hillsides. The route through the valley takes in views of the pine trees, ravines, stone houses and churches as well as criss-crossing the river.

Arriving in Macugnaga at the pretty main square the village is yours to explore!.

Why not take a stroll up through the wood and stone built Walser houses to the Chiesa Vecchia (Old Church)? It dates back to the 12th century and nearby is an old lime tree thought to be 500 years old. This was the meeting point for the Walser people to hold important meetings. Take a peek in the cemetery and find the plaques commemorating climbers who lost their lives on the surrounding mountains.

In the summer months you can also take a ride up to the Belvedere Glacier on the chairlift. The journey itself is beautiful a silent ride above the tree tops with wonderful views. It is only a short and very easy walk from the chairlift to the edge of the glacier moraine. An incredible experience!

Also during the summer you can take a cable car ride up to Monte Moro for panoramic views across to the glacier and Mount Rosa.

If you are visiting the first weekend of July you'll also be able to experience the traditional San Bernardo Fair.
